Moving Check List
Moving into your new home is a big job. The further you plan in advance, the smoother it will go. This moving checklist list contains most of the big tasks you will need to do and the suggested timeframe.
MOVING CHECKLIST
12 weeks before you move:
Chose your mover and sign the acceptance note
Sort through basement, loft and garage and start to purge
Resolve what to do with prohibited items
Make proper provision for pets
Decide whether or not you are taking your car
10 weeks before your move:
Dispose of the things you don’t want to take
Donate items to charity
8 weeks before you move:
Start to prepare your mailing list of people who need your change of address
Change mailing address at banks, savings accounts, credit card companies, magazine subscriptions
Start to round up passports, birth/marriage certificates and other family documentation
Check that electrical components will work in your new home
Contact your home owner insurance agent about coverage for moving
Make travel arrangements
6 weeks before you move:
Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date and get their records
Arrange for mail to be forwarded
Decide whether or not to buy any new household items.
Arrange for temporary storage if your new home is not ready
Contact insurance company(auto, homeowners, medical)
4 weeks before you move:
Decide which clothes travel with you
Start to dismantle climbing frames/garden furniture/outdoor items
If you have children, separate cherished toys to travel with you
Call physicians and dentists. They may recommend a colleague near your new home. Get your records and take them with you.
Arrange transfer of school records.
Transfer personal insurance records
Arrange termination date for electricity, gas, oil, telephone andother main suppliers
Agree on an insurance value and terms with your mover
Make arrangements to connect utility services at your new home
Return library books
Cancel newspapers, subscriptions, and other deliveries
Find new homes for your plants
7 days before your move:
Clean out and defrost the refrigerator/freezer
Reconfirm travel reservations
Have rugs cleaned
Plan simple meals for moving day to avoid using appliances
Separate luggage items you need for personal travel
Clean garden tools, bicycles and any other gardening equipment
Empty the tanks of power tools such as mowers, chainsaws, etc.
Secure enough medication for at least two weeks, and ensure you have copies of any necessary prescriptions for use at destination
Bring limited cash for smaller expenses
Arrange for someone to look after the children on moving day
Moving day:
Be on hand all day to answer questions, accompany driver during inventory, sign bill of lading, and confirm your new address and delivery date. Be sure to advise him of your enroute accommodations and telephone number, if known.
Make final check of every room and storage area. Make sure windows and doors are locked, keys are transferred and lights are out
